Smooth Sailing at “Cruising to New Horizons” Conference
The Arizona Senior Center Association(ASCA) held its annual conference at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Phoenix on July 20 and 21. The theme was “Cruising to New Horizons” and featured 15 outstanding presenters, 22 exhibitors, great food, and a fun and entertaining evening social. ASCA president, Leslie Rudders, recognized the Gold Sponsor, Area Agency on Aging, Region One, Incorporated, and the three Silver Sponsors: GeriFit, LPI (Liturgical Publications, Inc.), and SCAN Health Plan Arizona. She was also was pleased to announce registration of 21 new members, four new centers, and two new associations.
At the annual meeting, Patty Contreras, Past President, announced the recipient of the Jane Eck Memorial Scholarship, which awards opportunities for small rural communities to attend the conference. Frances Wickham, president of the Mammoth Senior Citizen’s Association and Vice Mayor of the Mammoth Town Council was the first recipient of this scholarship.
Leslie also recognized and thanked Phil Yabes, ASCA Treasurer, for his work this past year to secure the non-profit, 501 (c)3 status for the association. She also thanked Marcy Strand for volunteering her time to get everything ready for the conference including name tags, membership certificates, and registration materials.
Four new officers were elected at the annual meeting; these officers will assume their positions on August 1, 2015 and serve for two years: Adriana Morado, President, Ellen Marsh, Vice-President, Iliana Hernandez, Secretary, and Patty Contreras, Board member. They join Board members Josie Salas, Frances Wickham, Brenda Shumaker and Anita Hinojos whose two year terms will conclude July 31, 2016.
The annual meeting was followed by a presentation on the updated ASCA website. Ginnie Rowe, owner of DGR Communications showed members how to navigate the website and the new member’s forum. The forum will allow members to discuss and share ideas on a variety of subjects. Nancy Jackson explained how to provide a free video conference call using Google+. Google+ video conferencing allows for ten video users, additional call-ins, and for reviewing and sharing documents. This will be an added benefit to members who cannot travel long distances to be a part of a meeting.
Thanks to Leslie Rudders, Patty Contreras, Julie Bordelon, Marcy Strand, and Josie Salas for coordinating the annual conference, and to Phil Yabes and Terri Serein for their assistance.
