Report from Jane Eck National Institute of Senior Centers (NISC) Arizona Delegate"I have been busy at the National level looking out for the interests of Arizona’s seniors and Senior Centers. Recently I attended the NISC Fall Delegate Council Meetings in Washington, D.C. The Delegate Council approved a new Strategic Partnership Agreement with the National Council on Aging (NCOA). We are happy to have Maureen Arsenault as the NISC Coordinator and Barbara Eiden-Molinaro as our part time Program/ Development Coordinator for NISC (fund-raising). Welcome to them! While I was there, I did meet with our Congressmen, or staff, to advocate for increased funding for the Older Americans’ Act and Improving Medicare for Low-Income Beneficiaries. This article just came out and you all are to be congratulated for doing such an outstanding job!" Report from the White HouseThe White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) has assessed AoA and OAA programs as "effective"—the highest rating available. The rating award went to only 18 percent of the government programs OMB evaluates. According to the assessment, AoA and OAA programs have a clear purpose and are well managed, efficiently provide high-quality home and community-based services, and promote the well-being and independence of the elderly. October is Domestic Violence MonthArizona will join other states in increasing awareness of a common violent crime that will affect one in three women at some point during their lifetime. Last year there were 107 deaths in Arizona from domestic violence, 23 more than in 2005. A number of factors have contributed to the increase, including increased use of methamphetamine, economic hardship, rapid growth and mobility of families. We each need to do our part to help stem the violence. Let us all recommit ourselves this month to reach out to someone who might be in need of our help over the next year. Become a volunteer or make a contribution to a shelter in your community. Most important, watch for the signs and you may be able to rescue a colleague, relative or neighbor who could be suffering in silence. Anyone in imminent danger should call 911 and ask for law enforcement protection. Even if you only suspect something is wrong, you can call the National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-7233) to discuss the situation, anonymously if you prefer. You will never regret speaking up – you could regret doing nothing, forever. Health for a LifetimePrograms in this series are FREE and open to the public. For more information, call 602-262-7379. A NEW WEBSITE FOR WEIGHT LOSSby Brad Bixler/ASCA PresidentLast year I hurt my back and for the first time in my life, I was not able to exercise with the intensity that allowed me to eat whatever I wanted. As a result, I gained 30 lbs. even though I was taking walks and trying to eat healthy. With the help of the website below, I have lost 12 lbs. in 12 days. The website really helped me understand how much I was snacking, eating foods high in calories and eating late at night. I am not claiming to be an expert but do hold a degree in Health/Physical Education and Recreation. I am also a personal trainer. Recently I found a website that I recommend you think about as a possible computer/health promotion class at your senior centers. This FREE website allows customers to get caloric information on the foods they consume. It provides the means to keep a daily log of total calories consumed, and analyzes your individual food choices. The only way to lose weight is to burn more calories than you consume. Counting calories is time consuming but if you try this program for even a week it will allow you to review your eating patterns. Green Tea Fat Fighter?Need another healthy reason to drink green tea? Aside from fighting heart disease, cancer, and other diseases, a new study shows that drinking green tea may also fight fat. The study showed that people who drank a bottle of tea fortified with green tea extract every day for three months lost more body fat than those who drank a bottle of regular oolong tea. Researchers say the results indicate that substances found in green tea known as catechins may trigger weight loss by stimulating the body to burn calories and affect body fat accumulation and cholesterol levels. Green tea is particularly rich in a type of polyphenols called catechins. These substances have also been shown to have antioxidant, anticancer, antiviral, anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties. In this study, researchers looked at the effects of catechins on body fat reduction and weight loss in a group of 35 Japanese men. The men had similar weights and waist sizes. The men were divided into two groups. For three months, the first group drank a bottle of oolong tea fortified with green tea extract containing 690 milligrams of catechins, and the other group drank a bottle of oolong tea with 22 milligrams of catechins. During this time, the men ate identical breakfasts and dinners and were instructed to control their calorie and fat intake at all times so that overall total diets were similar. After three months, the study showed that the men who drank the green tea extract lost more weight (5.3 pounds vs. 2.9 pounds) and experienced a significantly greater decrease in BMI, waist size, and total body fat. General recommendations, based on previous studies on the benefits of green tea, are at least 4 cups a day. Green tea extract supplements are also available. Health TipMakeshift heating sources often harbor dangers. As the mercury dips, some people turn to alternative sources to ward off the cold. Too often, these practices lead to accidental deaths and injuries. "Ovens and stove tops should never be used for heating, and space heaters should be kept away from children, animals and flammable objects," says Dr. Paul Pepe, chairman of emergency medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center. People with fireplaces should also check their chimney and flue for leaves and branches, and allow for ventilation and fresh air when using the devices. If everyone in the house develops a headache at the same time, check the fireplace or other sources for carbon monoxide right away. Tips for Emergency PreparednessWe have always needed to be ready for emergencies. Everyone should have a plan in the case of an emergency. People with diabetes must consider proper diabetes care when they make emergency plans. Consider storing 3 days worth of diabetes supplies, which, depending on how you take care of your diabetes, could include oral medication, insulin, insulin delivery supplies, lancets, extra batteries for your meter and/or pump, and a quick-acting source of glucose. You may also want to have an extra glucagon emergency kit. All items should be kept in an easy-to-identify container and stored in a safe location. |
