From the President:

We are in the process of planning the 2010 Conference, July 19-20 at the Radisson Woodlands Hotel in Flagstaff and we invite you to join us in planning the event!  Our theme this year is “Innovations in Aging.”  Do you have a new program or new idea for the aging population?  Have you heard any interesting new speakers or read any literature on what new things are going on in aging? Send your ideas and/or if you are interested in leading an educational session send me your request at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

We are also signing up sponsors for the conference.  If you are aware of anyone who might want a booth at the conference to display their product send your ideas to Brad Bixler at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Join us at the Quarterly meeting in Phoenix at the Pecos Community Center, 17010 S. 48th St, on Thursday, February 25.  The speaker will discuss a personal safety program that can be brought to your senior center.  Program starts at 1 p.m.  Join us for lunch at 12 p.m., speaker at 1 p.m. and business meeting at 3 p.m.

In case you haven’t heard, the longtime leader of the City of Phoenix Senior Services Division, Doris Marshall, retired on December 31, 2009 after 33 years with the city.  Doris was a longtime member of ASCA.  In March, Doris will be recognized at the National Council on Aging conference. She was the winner of the National Institute of Senior Centers’ annual Founders Award. Receiving a national award is an outstanding way to end the career chapter of her life. Congratulations, Doris, and best wishes in your retirement!

We are looking for new members! There are membership opportunities for staff and volunteers working in your senior center.  There is a membership level for everyone; $25 Individual-for staff of Senior Centers, $50 Senior Center membership-for up to 3 people who are staff or active, approved volunteers of a Senior Center, $100 Organizational membership-for larger organizations which oversee 2 or more Senior Centers, to include up to 6 people, $50 Association membership-for any other entity that has an interest in the 50 or better population but not associated with or part of a Senior Center, and $10 Retiree-Non-voting membership for those who have been ASCA members for at least 3 years before retirement.

If you have an idea for a speaker or workshop please share them with me or other board members. If you would like to help on a committee, with a meeting, or on the newsletter, contact me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or (602) 809-8018.  By the way, we are also still looking for a Secretary to join the board.
